The Healthy Kids Community Challenge (HKCC) is a three-year healthy living program fundedby the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the City of SSM for kids zero to 12.
The program was created in response to the Ministry’s “No Time to Wait”, the Healthy Kids Strategy Report that was released in 2013. The goal of the HKCC is to create healthy environments in our community and to help more kids attain healthy weights.
The time to act on this is now. We know that too many of our children and youth are not at their most healthy weights, putting them at risk of serious health problems now and in the future. These are universal problems that can affect all children and families.
The great news is that the HKCC is a community-driven program. Past successes have shown that having the support of community members and local partners across all sectors increases the positive impacts a program like this can have. Together we can create healthy environments for children, families, and our community.
The program works like this: The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care provides overall healthy living “themes” that will be the focus of all of our activities for periods of nine months. Theme 1 is Physical Activity and the message we are promoting is “Run. Jump. Play. Every Day.”. Our goal for Theme 1 has been to listen and respond to the immediate needs of our community while setting ourselves up to make healthy living choices easier in the long-term. Theme 2 begins in July and is all about promoting water and reducing sugar-sweetened beverages.
